John Cook works at the confluence of applied mathematics and software development. After receiving a Ph.D. in from the University of Texas, he taught mathematics at Vanderbilt University. He then left academia to work as a software developer and consultant. He currently works as a research statistician at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. His career has been a blend of research, software development,consulting, and management. His areas of application have ranged from the search for oil deposits to the search for a cure for cancer. He lives in Houston with his wife and four daughters.
